The Muro Box music box plays MIDI files, and the hardware itself has flash memory that can store up to 1,024 songs.

The music box can directly play the last synced offline playlist by simply pressing the knob.

However, we recommend that you create additional playlists to categorize your collection, such as by genre or tempo: sleep, pop, classical, 80s hits, etc. This way, you can play different playlists according to the situation, enhancing your listening experience.

To adjust the songs in the offline playlist. you need to connect the music box to the app, where you can add or remove songs from the offline playlist or drag them to change their orders in the offline playlist.

Not familiar with connecting to the app? No worries! The music box comes pre-loaded with the official playlist (30 songs for N20; 15 songs for N40). Once plugged in, simply press the knob to play the default playlist. If you have a custom arrangement, it will be uploaded to the music box before shipping, so you can listen to your selected songs by just plugging in and pressing the knob, without needing the app.

No, it doesn’t. You can consider the Muro Box as an “unlocked” or “one-time purchase” music box.

After each arrangement is completed, we will:
Provide a Preview: Send you an MP3 file for review. You will have two opportunities to request adjustments.
Final review: Once the arrangement is approved, we will output the MIDI file and upload it to the music box. You will be able to hear the customized arrangement by simply powering on the music box and pressing the button.

We know that making the music box movement become a DIY module for people to design their own boxes will attract many makers. However, at this early stage, we try to control its performance and stability first for building product’s reputation, so we cannot allow customers to purchase the mechanical part alone. Any mistake in assembling the box may interfere its music playing performance and even damage its hardware.

To avoid potential negative feedback due to inappropriate assembling process, we cannot sell Muro Box without its wooden case. However, after our product is mature enough for developing a DIY module, we will definitely share this news with our fans.

Due to the complex safety regulations involved in transporting batteries, we decided from the very beginning of the design process not to include a battery, allowing the music box to be shipped to as many countries as possible.
If you need to use the music box on the go, the N20 Standard/ N40 Standard/ N40 Sublime models all support using USB-C power banks, making it easy to take the music box with you anywhere.

Compatible power bank specifications: Minimum of 30W USB-C power supply. Please use a model that supports 15V voltage and at least 2A current (such as 30W 15V/2A or 45W 15V/3A).

Shipping Time for Orders on Our Official Website: shipping is within 7 business days.

🎼 Comb Design & Sublime Harmony

  • N40 SublimeIts comb has an extra set of teeth tuned at –14 cents compared to the Standard model.

When notes are struck, the –14 cent comb plays simultaneously, creating a subtle pitch difference.

This produces the “Sublime Harmony” effect: a unique trembling resonance and extended tail tone, giving the sound more emotional depth and complexity.

  • N40 Standard:Uses a single comb without the –14 cent offset, resulting in a cleaner, purer sustain without the layered trembling effect.

⚙️ Base Material

  • N40 Standard:The base is made of zinc alloy. This provides stability but keeps the sound lighter and brighter.
  • N40 Sublime:The base is made of brass, which is heavier and denser. Brass enhances resonance and gives the tone a deeper, steadier character.

🌳 Solid Wood Body

  • N40 Sublime:Uses heat-treated Acacia wood, a premium tonewood often favored in high-end guitars. Acacia adds warmth and complexity, enriching the harmonics and supporting the trembling tail effect.
  • N40 Standard:Uses North American hardwood, also common in guitars and instruments. Its character emphasizes pure, natural sound reproduction—clean and straightforward, without added bright overtones or lingering resonance.

Summary

  • N40 Sublime = Extra –14 cent comb teeth + Brass base + Acacia wood → Layered trembling resonance, extended sustain, warmer and richer timbre.
  • N40 Standard = Single comb + Zinc alloy base + North American hardwood → Pure, clean, straightforward tone with natural clarity.

The N20 is our classic pioneering model. The N40 was created to break musical boundaries, allowing music lovers, musicians, and collectors to achieve the goal of “transcending scale limitations and experiencing the absolute musical freedom to play whatever you desire.”

2. Musical Expression:

N20: The 20-note scale does not include semitones (the black keys on a piano). Most pop songs can be condensed or transposed to be performed with these 20 notes.

N40: The 40-note scale expands the range and includes semitones (chromatic scale), offering significantly more performance possibilities. For those who enjoy grand arrangements or songs with prominent semitones (such as movie soundtracks, minor key songs, jazz, and classical music), the N40 is the ideal choice to match your musical preferences!

3. Comb and Tone Differences:

N20 Series: Features one 20-note comb, producing a crisp, bright sound.

N40 Standard: Uses two combs (40 notes total). The sound is the same as the N20—crisp and bright.

N40 Sublime (SLM): Features four combs working in harmony. Each note strikes two teeth tuned 14 cents apart (80 teeth in total), creating a dense, rich resonance that replicates the luxurious sound of antique music boxes.

For more details on sound samples, materials, and resonance box differences, please refer to this article: Which Music Box Is Suitable for Me?

Music Creation Need

a

The N40’s range is downward compatible with the 40, 30, 20, and 15 notes music boxes, including the Muro Box-N20. So, any compositions created for the N20, whether by you or other customers, can be directly played on the N40.

(1) File Format Restriction: Muro Box can only read single-track MIDI files and does not support other formats.

(2) Range Restriction:
N20: Range from C3 to A5, covering the white keys of a piano (excluding black keys).
N40: Range from F2 to A6, excluding F#2, G#2, A#2, and C#3.(Middle C = C3, 261.6 Hz)

(3) Track Length Restriction: Each song can be played for a maximum of 30 minutes as set in the app to prevent insufficient space on the mobile device.

(4)Playback Speed Limit:
At a tempo of BPM = 120, the minimum unit for consecutive single notes is an eighth note.
This means that when using eighth notes, the fastest possible rate for consecutive single notes is 4 beats per second, or 240 beats per minute.
Maximum simultaneous note output:
– N20 model = 7 notes
– N40 model = 10 notes
(Maximum simultaneous note output refers to the highest number of notes that can be struck and played at the same time.)

Q: Why is there a speed limit for note playback?

Speed Limit: For the same pitch, the maximum playback rate is 4 beats per second (BPM = 240). Faster rhythms will be automatically filtered out.
Design Rationale: Most music box melodies are gentle and soothing. Since the music box is a simple acoustic instrument, fast-paced arrangements require careful tuning to sound pleasant.
Physical Constraints: Rapid consecutive notes can cause a “click” noise due to overlapping vibrations. To prevent this, a damper is needed to quickly stop the comb’s vibration.
However, due to the limited internal space of a music box, we cannot use large felt dampers like those found in pianos. Instead, we use a chrome-plated vibration absorber beneath the comb. While this performs better than traditional music boxes, it still doesn’t match the rapid damping effect of a piano.
Motor Noise: Higher motor speeds increase gear and motor noise. Although the Muro Box motor can run faster, we’ve chosen the current setting to balance performance and sound quality.

Due to hardware limitations, continuous playback is capped at a maximum of 3 hours. After 3 hours, the playback speed will be reduced to prevent the device from overheating. If you have a need for long-duration playback, we recommend setting the playlist to scheduled playback. Please ensure that there is at least a 30-minute interval between the start times of each playlist to protect the hardware components from wearing out too quickly. You are welcome to check the instructions for setting up scheduled playlist playback.

Both the N20 Standard, N40 Standard and N40 Sublime use USB-PD and can be powered by a portable power bank, allowing you to take your Muro Box wherever you go!
(Note: The N20 Lite uses a traditional DC power supply and does not support external power bank functionality.)

Compatible power bank specifications: Minimum of 30W USB-C power supply. Please use a model that supports 15V voltage and at least 2A current (such as 30W 15V/2A or 45W 15V/3A).
