|The Numbers 40 / 30 / 20 / 15 Represent the Music Box’s Note Range|
When browsing songs, you’ll notice a number next to each piece, indicating its “note range specification,” based on the settings of current mainstream paper-strip music boxes and the Muro Box programmable music box.
The note range of a music box is more limited compared to other instruments. When creating a melody, users arrange it according to the number of available notes: 40 represents the 40-note range, while 15, 20, and 30 correspond to their respective note counts.
- 15 Notes (No Semitones)
Typical of small DIY paper-strip music boxes (e.g., Kikkerland 15). The melodies are simple and crisp, suitable for lively children’s songs or straightforward tunes and accompaniments. - 20 Notes (No Semitones)
It corresponds to the most common 20-note paper-strip music boxes and the Muro Box-N20 standard programmable music box. The note range is moderate, making it a popular choice for many classic arrangements; most pop songs can be arranged within this range. - 30 Notes (Missing 2 Low Notes, 1 High Note, and 9 Semitones; the Rest Are Consecutive Notes)
Offers a wider range with some semitones and is commonly found in high-end hand-crank music boxes. - 40 Notes (Only Missing 4 Low Semitones; the Rest Are Consecutive Notes)
Includes rich semitone coverage, allowing for subtle key changes and complex tonal arrangements suitable for pop, classical, and film music. - Downward Compatibility
The number of notes is downward compatible. For example, the Muro Box-N40 functions like an automatic piano with 40 keys and can play songs arranged for 40, 30, 20, or 15 notes; the reverse is not true.*If a song contains notes beyond the highest or lowest playable range of the Muro Box programmable music box, those notes will not be played. Notes within the range but missing (such as semitones) will automatically be played one semitone higher.
