Eugene Kazantsev - A Professional Music Arranger Turns People’s Dreams into His Music Box Melodies with Muro Box (Ukraine)

Eugene Kazantsev

My name is Eugene Kazantsev and I am a professional music box composer. For the last 4 years, I have created more than 1000 custom music box melodies for different types of music box mechanisms. I have recorded and produced original music box melodies, popular song covers, and have created notation for DIY paper strip music boxes, MIDI and audio music box versions for people all over the entire world.

I’m happy to be one of the first composers working with Muro Box and always happy to work on creating new melodies.

Why I Love Music Boxes?

Music box sound is something that can immediately take you into a world of childhood dreams, miracles, and fairy tales. It can take your mind out of real life, and at the same time, it can open a door to your inner world, your real beauty, and your honesty.

I love to compose music box versions of popular melodies, while I work on music box melodies, I always imagine that I hear this particular melody out of a small music box like it is in a fantasy film. Or just imagine that people who have this music box for a present are standing with friends and listening to their favorite melody from the music box.

Why I Enjoy Creating Customized Music Box Melodies?

I create notations, Midi and Audio music box versions of popular songs for clients all over the world. I’m sure I have made more than 1000 melodies for different types of music boxes, mechanisms and devices.

I started making music box melodies, not on purpose. I play many musical instruments professionally and work as a touring musician, creating and producing my own music and creating music and audio design for videos.

At some point as a freelancer, I found a fun way to earn money by creating mp3 music box audio versions of popular songs for people using VST (computer music box sound). Then some of my clients asked me to help create notation for their real DIY music boxes, and I really found it interesting.

I started learning the music box mechanism types and their scale technical requirements and so far became quite good at it. Actually, with Muro box, I feel my passion for modern computer music and technology and my love for real music mechanisms were united.

It is a real miracle!

How I Met the Muro Box

In 2020 I have seen on the internet that absolutely new music is designed – Muro Box. A company that wanted to unite the “classical” music box sound and mechanism with the latest technologies in audio production released Muro Box. I was impressed with the idea to program as many songs as you want with one mechanism.

With Muro Box what you only need is to find in the App the melody you like or write a notation of any melody you want. I’m honored to be one of the first composers who created melodies for Muro box.

A Story from the Customer of Muro Box

Thanks to the Muro Box Team for giving me the chance to serve their customers. The following is a story shared by a Franch customer (Nicolas Rousseau) about his childhood memory with the theme melody from a Japanese animated fantasy film “My Neighbour Totoro”.

Nicolas Rousseau- “My Neighbour Totoro”

I used to live as a kid in a remote area in France, a communist city of less than 5000 inhabitants, in a 200-years old house. Leaving out the nearby forests, the books and TV, the mysteries in the attic such as a small music box and dusty dolls, there was not much to do around. Except for this really small theater, used for local plays and movies. The movies were mainly auteur movies, short-movies, and so were the ones for the kids.

In this theater, with my little brother and sister I discovered and enjoyed films of Nick Park, Tim Burton, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, The Monty Python, and so much more. And obviously Hayao Miyazaki, which was really peculiar in France in those days ; but at that time the little 10-years old me wasn’t aware of that. Today, I am really grateful for all those magical journeys this theater gave me, the world and culture I could have grasped from the too big, too old theater’s seats.

Totoro is iconic all around the world but for me, of all the movies I have seen in this little theater, the story of My Neighbour Totoro reminded me most of the area we were living in. Remote, living with imagination and passing time with the family.
Funny thing is that I don’t really recall the details of the movie at that time (I’ve seen it many then, be assured) but the memory right before the film is still vivid : the cold snowy weather and red noses in winter, the hot tea and fresh bread freely distributed in the queue, the steam coming out of my brother’s mouth, the loud noisy expectation of dozens of small kids. All of that in front of that small theater, waiting and wondering what would be this weird grey cat-bear.

We didn’t have the OP back in the days, no internet and no tapes, but I still remember me and my sister humming the Neighbour Totoro song right out of the theater, getting in the car back to home and screaming like it would have been the Catbus.
We hummed the song for months. I still do, I have to admit.

My story might be a little long, sorry about that, but this is why I am so sincerely grateful to all of you, MUROBOX Team, for bringing back such a fundamental and wonderful memory.
Some shall call it nostalgia, they might not be wrong, but to me it is a gift to my 1-year old son, to have his own version of this song and for a brief moment the only one in the world.
Past is what we are and what others will be, may they accept it.
