We Relive Global Customers’ Special Memories with Their Customized Melodies
The Serendipity between Muro Box and Me Started from a Music Arrangement Case
Hello everyone. I am the music arranger, Hung-Yin Liu. I started learning piano at 4 years old. I have passed YAMAHA’s guidance and performance double grade five examination. I am familiar with computer arrangement, and I have produced more than a hundred compositions for the Muro Box customers, including pop music, classical music, soundtracks, children’s songs and other types of music.
In 2018, I received a special case to compose the theme song of the famous American TV series – Friends (The Rembrandts – I’ll Be There For You), and use the music box sound to make its digital file. At the time, I was curious about what kind of company would need the sound file of the music box tone, so I googled the background of Tevofy Technology Ltd..
I found that they hoped to interpret the classic songs of various ages through the mechanical music box, so as to arouse everyone’s desire to collect those precious memories with their music boxes. The Muro Box music box houses the expectations of those memories. I think this is a cool and interesting task, and thus I began to collaborate with the Muro Box team to arrange customized melodies for their customers.
I Love to Arrange Music Because…
When listening to music, I can envision the scenes like watching movies, and there will be heroes and their stories. Music is the medium that brings back your unforgettable memories and the touching moments.
Because I enjoy those touching moments, I also hope that I can help people create those moments with my music. Hence, I started my career as a music arranger, and I hope that more and more people will feel the same way as they listen to my music.
To my suprise, my music arrangement helped global customers carry out their dreams!
When working with the Muro Box Team, I edited the customer’s requested melodies to make them sound great on the music box. I gradually found that the magic of a music box is to simplify the music but preserve its essence in the melody. It is like a filter effect on your phone, to make every song sound pure and clear for you to get closer to it.
Whenever I receive a new melody request, I prioritize my goal in making the leading melody easy to recognize and then keep the original song’s atmosphere as much as possible. After I receive their feedback and story about those melodies, I realize that I not only help them arrange the melodies, but also relive their memories.
Cherishing the Limited Time by Preserving the Wonderful Memory for His Wife
One day, an American professor, Lee Smith, asked the Muro Box team to arrange a song “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” by the Police. This song is great but its chord arrangement and solo part contain semitones that need to be shifted, and I think making this shift may make the client feel that it is not like the original song. At first, I suggested this client change his melody, but the customer support team member of Muro Box told me why this customer loved this meaningful song. This customer has been diagnosed with Stage IV cancer and may not be able to celebrate many birthdays with his wife later, so he wished to preserve his love for his dear wife with the music box as her birthday gift.
After hearing this customer’s story, I changed my mind and decided to do my best to help him preserve this memory (and of course, I have explained this case is challenging to him so he can understand the limitation in advance). In order to make his song sound like its original song, I spent a lot of time listening to it and adjusting it. When the draft was sent to him for review, he wrote a long letter to thank our team’s effort. He said the following words in his review, “There were tears, there were smiles, and many, many kisses. The Muro Box team is my idea of what an excellent company is/can/ and should be!”
I was so happy and excited to receive his comment, and I knew that I did the right thing to help them preserve this wonderful memory. What made me even more surprised is that this customer, Lee Smith, wrote a detailed comment on our product page for the customized melody arrangement service.
Capture the Features of the Original Song to Salute its Original Composer
Another challenging case I still remember up to now is from a Hong Kong customer’s special request. This customer, Yuet-Yee, told me that more than 10 years ago, she had a crush on her boyfriend after listening to a special love song, “Remembering You for a Lifetime” composed by him. Since then, she has attempted to find a music box that can play this meaningful song for her boyfriend, and she even flew to the Otaru music box museum in Japan to search for it. However, she did not find a satisfactory answer because the clerk told her that creating a new mode to produce a new melody is very expensive and the lead time is very long. Therefore, such a meaningful song can only stay in her heart. Until Yuet Yee saw our 2020 Indiegogo campaign video, she was so excited to see that finally someone has invented a programmable music box to play her unique song so that she can preserve this meaningful song as a personalized gift for her boyfriend.
Because this song is expected to let its original composer recognize its melody easily, I have revised this song’s MIDI files many times in order to make sure this song will sound very close to its original song. Finally, I made it and received her appreciation in the comments, so our team was extremely excited that we helped this customer fulfill her dream that could not be achieved 10 years ago.
Attending the Muro Box Live Concert for the First Time
One July, 30, 2022, I attended the Muro Box Live Concert to play the songs requested by participants before this event. I used the standard version of Muro Box to connect it with a MIDI keyboard to control the Muro Box in live performance.
After the live performance, our team chatted with the participants to understand why they requested those songs, and one participant said that this song “Thousand Winds” is the song played at his father’s funeral. Another participant said he missed the sound from an old music box that has broken teeth on its vibration plate, and another participant said that he wanted to listen to the dance song while the last one said he loved the famous tea brand’s commercial video’s soundtrack so he wished the Muro Box can imitate its sound.
I was excited to see that everyone brings a unique song because they are from different backgrounds and with different personal stories associated with those melodies. Interacting with this interesting group of people has broadened my vision and understanding of what good music is. I think as long as the music can touch people’s heart, it is good music no matter what format it is presented in.
A Music Box for Preserving Everyone’s Memories from Childhood to Old Age
Every personal story associated with the melody request is a unique and precious lesson for me. When I can read the story behind this melody request, I can feel the customer’s emotional bond with their beloved spouse, grandparents, children and friends. Hence, each melody I created for Muro Box to play is to express the special memories for my customers to the hearts of their loved ones.
I also have some personal songs that will remind me of someone special. When I am editing a familiar song, I often sing along with it and many scenes of the old days will come to my mind suddenly. That is the magic power of music: different people can relate to the same melody and recall their different memories.
